Community Service Ministry
Philosophy of Community Service Ministry
The life of Jesus Christ was one of service. He served the Lord while He also served mankind, and it was this service which led to his crucifixion (Mark 10:45). In a Christian’s quest to become more Christ-like, service is an important component. In its effort to present every person complete in Christ, Lincoln Berean would fail if it did not offer and encourage believers to serve.
The Who? Why? How? Where? When? and What? of Service
Who is to serve?
All believers have been given spiritual gifts by God, and we are to use these gifts in serving others.
1 Peter 4:10, 11 – “As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God...whoever serves is to do so as one who serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified.”
Who are we to serve?
We are to serve the Body by serving in the Church (1 Corinthians 12).
We are also to serve the less fortunate in our community. (Matthew 25:35-40).
Why are we to serve?
As believers, our motivation to serve comes from the fact that God has called every believer to serve. Philippians 2:3-4 says, "With humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.
We are not called to serve in order to merit our salvation. The Bible instructs us that, “For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast (Ephesians 2:8-9).”
Why should we serve in the community?
It provides a great opportunity to share the Good News of Jesus Christ, to give an account for the hope that lies within us (1 Peter 3:15). The opportunity may not be there to share Christ directly with the people being served, however the opportunity to be a powerful witness for Christ will be there simply by the act of serving. Service gives an opportunity to put faith into action and to glorify God – it is an outward expression of the internal change that Jesus has performed within us.
How? Where? When? What?
These are the questions that often stopped willing hearts from serving, and it is these questions have led to the development of the Community Service Ministry. The intent and mission of this ministry is to be a resource to individuals, LifeGroups, and ministries at LBC, to equip them with the essential information they will need to get out and do it. It is the mission of this ministry to use “helping hands” from LBC to “reach hearts” in our community.
