"How Big is Your God?"
We were tired from sleeping on the concrete floors. We had hundreds of ant bites and working in the intense heat for the last five days had left us exhausted
That morning, we had been praying about our construction project. Even though our students had been working so hard, we worried we’d have to leave the project incomplete because of the lack of materials and our inability to locate a cement mixer. All week, our team had been mixing cement by hand with shovels and wheelbarrows and it was grueling work. Discouraged, Josué and Alejandro went to town to find more materials, while we went to our work sites. A few hours later, Alejandro was back. With his face beaming, he spoke in broken English, “How big is your God?” I followed him around the corner and saw a dusty pick-up with a huge cement mixer strapped on the back!
While they were in town, Josue and Alejandro had gotten lost and happened to drive by a construction site that was using a cement mixer. They stopped to talk to the workers, but were told that it was impossible to rent a mixer. When the “jefe” came out, Alejandro explained what our team was doing and how we wanted to show the love of God to the poorest of people in Upala. Immediately, the man started shouting to his workers and told them to load the huge mixer into our tiny pick-up. The “jefe” turned to Alejandro and said, “I know you can’t rent one of these here, but I can let you use mine… for free. And tomorrow I will send four workers to help you all day. I feel like God wants me to help you.”
As Alejandro was telling us the story, he kept asking, “How big is your God?” It had an amazing impact on our team to see God do this and so many other cool things on our trip. That phrase has stuck with me since coming back to Lincoln. I have tried to ask God to open my eyes to how big and majestic He really is. I have realized I am not really counting on God to do great things in my life or the lives of people around me. I still struggle with believing in Him to answer prayer…to heal the sick…to move people’s hearts toward Himself…to bring healing to a broken family…to rescue a hurting teen. But, I want my God to be bigger. I want to remember how He showed up in Upala. I guess that’s something I still have to work on.
