What’s Your Answer?
Imagine that you are sitting in your living room and suddenly God appears. He sits down on your couch and angel-seraphs fill the room and call out, “Holy, Holy, Holy is the Lord of Hosts. His bright glory fills the whole earth.” Your entire house shakes at the sound of these angels. What would you say to God? What do you suppose He would say to you?
Isaiah experienced this; it was in a vision recorded in Isaiah 6. When Isaiah saw and felt God’s very presence, his response was, “Woe is me, for I am ruined!” Today’s translation: “I’m dead meat!” Isaiah’s recognition of God’s perfect holiness clearly revealed Isaiah’s sinfulness. God responded to Isaiah’s humility by extending mercy and forgiveness and then He asked, “Who shall I send? Who will go for us?”
Isaiah said, “Exactly what is it that you want me to do? I’m really busy right now…could you come back maybe next year? Besides being busy, I don’t know if I’m even qualified. I’m sure you could find someone else who is better. I hear your request, but ask someone else.”
No, that was not what Isaiah said. After his encounter with God, he answered God’s call to serve with an immediate response, “Here am I. Send me!” It was a response born out of his recognition and love for God—without question, without hesitation.
God is still asking each believer, “Who shall I send? Who will go for us?” It’s His plan.
“Service should come from a high and holy view of God. To see God rightly is to be both humbled and excited about the truth that He would call us to accomplish His purpose on earth. We are not doing God a favor when we serve. Rather, He has done us the great favor of inviting us to invest our lives in that which lasts forever. He has not only saved us, but has called each believer to a strategic role in accomplishing His purpose on earth.” (Called to Serve, Bryan Clark).
God is still asking each believer, “Who shall I send? Who will go for us?” “Here am I. Send me!” is the response that God desires…the response our Holy, Holy, Holy God deserves. That’s the response He’s looking and longing for…from you.
