Agora Fellowship

New Semester Begins September 2015

Leadership for the Common Good

In ancient Greek, the agora was a gathering place in the middle of a city that served as the center for commerce, politics, education, the arts, religion, and civic life. What happened in the agora shaped the society as a whole. Not much has changed. Today the ideas and practices that flow from the academies, churches/temples/synagogues, businesses, houses of government, and studios profoundly change and shape the society in which we live.

Purpose
The Fellowship equips young professionals to integrate their Christian commitment and vocation enabling them to impact their professions for God’s kingdom and to be agents of cultural renewal.

Description
The Fellowship is a nine-month intensive program designed to provide young professionals with a solid base of theological, ethical, and cultural understanding. Through weekly readings and discussions, monthly gatherings, and one-on-one mentoring with a mature person in their profession, Fellows will develop as influential leaders in their professions who can serve effectively as ambassadors for God’s kingdom and contribute to the common good locally, regionally, nationally, and even internationally.

Content
The Fellowship addresses six key questions. During their nine-months, Fellows will wrestle with:
· What is God doing? (Theology)
· What am I to be doing? (Calling)
· For what purpose am I to be doing it? (Goal)
· What environment am I doing it in? (Culture)
· What can I accomplish? (Influence)
· How am I to be doing it? (Ethics)

Who should apply?
Men and women, 25-35 years of age, working in fields including higher education, law, medicine, the sciences, media, arts, government, and business/finance. The applicant should (1) be currently employed full-time, (2) have at least a year of working experience in his or her profession, (3) possess clear and strong Christian commitment and character, and (4) desire to use his or her position of leadership to influence the culture for God’s kingdom and the common good.

Fellowship Requirements
· Complete weekly readings
· Attend and participate in weekly discussions over the readings
· Attend monthly gatherings to meet with guest speakers or go on excursions in and around the city of Lincoln
· Complete 2-3 written assessments over the course of the nine months

Benefits
· Build a theological foundation in work, culture, and faith
· Become aware of the cultural and civic needs unique to the Lincoln community
· Develop close relationships with other young Christian professionals committed to influencing the culture through their vocations
· Opportunities for follow-up training and resources after completion of the program

Cost
Annual book fee of approximately $200

Recharge: One-Day Children’s Ministry Conference

Saturday, January 24, 8:00AM - 2:00PM

A one-day conference at Lincoln Berean specifically designed for those serving in Children's Ministry.

Keynote Speaker: Teri Effle
Teri has been working with families for 17+ years. The title of her talk is: Speak Life.

Session Details [Choose 3 to Attend]
[1] Engaging Kids in Worship and Arts // Mike Stelzer and Gina Boe
Learn creative and fun ways to teach kids to worship as well as use their God given abilities for Him. We will also discuss practical and effective ways to use the arts and music to lead kids in worship.

[2] Got Parents? // Rod Zach
How do we as a children's ministry connect and involve parents with what we do each Sunday? What can we do so parents know, help and give input with what we do in our ministry with their kids? Come join us for a round table discussion and time of instruction regarding parent involvement.

[3] Grace Based Discipline // Derek and Teri Effle
You have heard of it. You may have read the book. Now come participate in a discussion on what Grace Based Discipline looks like when it has to hit the ground running in a classroom. Not listening? Nuisance behaviors? Sticking crayons up their nose? Grace covers that. This is a practical session about the tension between giving kids what they need and getting something accomplished in Sunday School.

[4] Using Environment to your Advantage // Liz Scott
How to use your environment to make kids feel welcome and safe. This session will help you make the most of your Sunday School space, and make all of the elements of your story, craft and play time come to life. Even details such as the flow of the room and scheduling can make the experience for kids much more fulfilling.

[5] Optimizing your Preteen Ministry // Derek Steinacher & Chris Berger
Gone are the days of being relevant just because you are taller than your students. It is possible for preteens to be the most excited and energized group at your church. Hear strategies and stories on how to build strong relationships, offer age-appropriate programming and challenge the students to grow in their relationship with Jesus. Turn the preteen years from a time of kids disconnecting with church to a time of growth in current students and connecting with new students!

[6] Take your Team to a Higher Level // Jeff Keiser
How to turn interested individuals into a transformational team .

[7] Connecting with Kids // Lance White
Telling bible stories and other techniques for keeping kids' attention.

[8] WAIT—Pregnancy Center Pregnancy // Karissa Vieth
The Pregnancy Center in Lincoln would like to invite you to learn about the WAIT training curriculum designed to teach the importance of healthy relationships and providing skills for life. WAIT training curriculum is an overwhelmingly positive message emphasizing that youth can achieve the best in relationships by waiting for marriage. Join us to learn more about this resource for parents and anyone who works with youth.

[9] Understanding a Child's Uniqueness // Scott Daniell
We will look at the importance of understanding each students strengths/personality, character development, spiritual formation, background and investment and how each of these factors serve in what you experience in the classroom. How do these factors affect your response to problem behaviors, based on what each child needs. Our hope is that you will come out of this session, with a deeper appreciation of God's creative design of each one, and how to serve in each child becoming all that God intended them to be.

[10] Who are we….in Christ? // Tracy Brester and Jana Darst
Helping tween girls to see who they are in Christ. We will walk you through some great unique ideas for helping young girls see and experience who they are in Christ. These ideas can be used at weekly meetings, bible studies or in Sunday School.

[11] What if there’s a Fire?....and other Policies and Procedures // Bob Bruner and Chris Cook
We'll discuss how to create a safe environment for your kids and having a plan in place for tornado or fire drills, security measures if you are in a lockdown situation and other helpful safety tips for those working with children.

[12] Behavior Busters // Katie Troupe
Challenging behavior is just that… challenging! Do you have a child who cries every week? Do you have a child that is aggressive? Is rowdy and non-compliant behavior running the show? We will explore practical, easy-to-implement strategies that you can make and take back to your Sunday groups to stop challenging behavior in its tracks.

[13] Child Advocacy Center // Kati Umberger
The purpose of this training is to prepare mandatory reporters with the knowledge and skill needed to recognize and report child abuse and neglect. Participants will be able to define child abuse and neglect, identify who must report child abuse and neglect, and become familiar with the roles and responsibilities of child protective services, law enforcement and child advocacy centers in protecting children. In this training, participants will discuss challenges associated with reporting abuse and neglect and receive resources that will help them with knowing how and when to report.

[14] Persevering Through the Dreary Days of Ministry // Shane Sundermann
Have you experienced the dreary days of ministry? Have you lost your passion and excitement for ministry? Do things seem to never work out right? Do you tend to dwell on the negative more than the positive? Through this session you will learn the 5 R’s of perseverance, refocus, return, rethink, refuel and rely.

Registration required. $30/person
